Identity vs. Nationality vs. Ethnicity
By Zeba Khan / muslimmatters.org
Culturally, and consciously, I'm a Muslim.
Alhamdulillah. My nationality is American, and my ethnicity is Irish-Pakistani. I'm married to a lovely man whose ethnicity and nationality are Pakistani. My children are also Muslim, and
inshaAllah, may they live in the state of Islam and not die except in a state of submission. Allah is the Lord of the East and the West, and the whole earth is a place of worship. Who knows where my children will live when they grow up.

Privilege Pulls Qatar Toward Unhealthy Choices
By MICHAEL SLACKMAN / NY Times
Like other oil-rich nations, Qatar has leaped across decades of development in a short time, leaving behind the physically demanding life of the desert for air-conditioned comfort, servants and fast food. Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia all share similar struggles with obesity, diabetes and genetic disorders, each suffering the side effects of an oil-financed lifestyle

A morally bankrupt dictatorship built by slave labour
By Johann Hari / The Independent
Dubai is finally financially bankrupt - but it has been morally bankrupt all along. The idea that Dubai is an oasis of freedom on the Arabian peninsular is one of the great lies of our time. Yes, it has Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts and the Gucci styles, but beneath these accoutrements, there is a dictatorship built by slaves.

A Five-Star Ghost Town at the End of 'The World'
By Tim McGirk / Times
The World is one of many architectural fantasies in Dubai that now appear to be shimmering mirages. The emirate boasts the 2,684-ft. Burj Dubai, the world's tallest skyscraper; a man-made island shaped like a giant palm; a ski slope in a shopping mall; and an 18-hole golf course (unfinished) in the middle of the desert that will slurp down a million gallons of water a day. But the dozens of giant cranes that once littered the skyline have migrated elsewhere. Dubai today has the feel of a futuristic, five-star ghost town blasted by sandstorms.

Gulf excess and Pakistani slaves
By Rafia Zakaria / The Daily Times
Pakistanis themselves, mired in denial and ever-ready to engage in the pantomime of pretending to be Arab, are inured to this reality of Arab racism. Easily appeased with the promise of Gulf jobs when their own country is in shambles they consider any paltry thankless employment a godsend

ABC News Exclusive: Torture Tape Implicates UAE Royal Sheikh
By VIC WALTER, REHAB EL-BURI, ANGELA HILL and BRIAN ROSS
If there is going to be a downfall for these tiny kingdoms in the Middle East, it won't be due to the lack of democracy, but a turn towards injustice. The prince's sadistic torture of a person due to a business deal turned sour is so disgusting that it is hard to imagine.
